Sandown Racing Tips
Track: Soft 5. Rail: Out 5m entire circuit
Best Bet: Race 5 – FIFTY STARS
Race 1: Maiden Plate 1300m
DUALITY (2) has the horrible draw to deal with but with the majority of the horses from the Waterhouse/Bott yard he will go forward anyone. He was really good on debut, if he can get up in the speed cheaply from out there he will be hard to beat.
As always in these events watch for any money for the un-raced brigade, LEGALE (4) has trialed well for the leading stable, MOUNT KILCOY (5) hasn’t been seen at the official trials but is from the all-conquering Weir stable and PROPRIUS (6) is an interesting runner that showed a little talent at his first prep, has spelled and since been sent to the Weir yard. Watch the betting with him.
Race 2: 2YO Fillies Handicap 1000m
No use spending much time on this. 13 2YO’s with 8 of them un-raced. Stay out and wait for better opportunities. If you must have a watch for interest, throw in PROPELLE (8), KOBE PRINCESS (6), FIRESTREAKER (3) and COSMIC RUBY (1).
Race 3: Mares BM78 Handicap 1000m
WEEKEND ESCAPE (7) is the most inexperienced horse in the field but there is a lot to like about her, most notably her racing pattern of jumping and running. She has won twice on the synthetic which some judges will tell you leans towards a liking for the soft tracks, watch the betting to see if she is ready to go after a four-week break.
MANHATTAN SPIRIT (9) ran on well at the Bool over the carnival, that was on a soft track also. She was a winner second-up last campaign which she is today. STRYKINGLEE (5) is resuming, she has trialed well, but she is likely to be giving them a start. CLIPPER (3) is consistent and this stable must be respected when they bring one south.
Race 4: BM64 Handicap 2400m
JOHNNY VINKO (3) has been runner-up at his last couple, the latest he had no luck before getting out late and running through the line well, albeit too late after the winner got away. He will roll forward and look for cover up on the speed.
CREDENCE (5) drops a stack in grade from Listed level last start, he hit the line really well in that but is now having his seventh start at preparation number one. He looks a good lay if at the top of the market. CALIFORNIAGRANDCRU (9) has only won the one race but gets out to a more preferred distance here and this is easier.
THE HUN (8) is a last start maiden winner, he had no luck and was held-up all the way to the furlong pole, got out and charged to get up close to the line.
Race 5: 3YO BM70 Handicap 1400m
FIFTY STARS (2) is undefeated at two career starts, both at Warrnambool, the latest a convincing effort over the carnival when running on hard. He can take the next step here and the soft track should only increase his chances.
VILLA SARCHI (6) should appreciate coming back to Wednesday grade, he has been getting home well at his last couple following a dominant win fresh here on the Hillside. NIGHT FALLS (9) finally got the maiden win last start after placing at his first four career runs, the barrier is obviously a concern, but it may not be too much of a disadvantage to be wide here today. MR MONEY BAGS (4) was ok in town on a Saturday last time after getting wide, not easy to do that at Flemington from the 1400m.
Race 6: Mares BM78 Handicap 1400
SUMMER GLEN (14) was good at the Bool after being forced to work up on the speed and didn’t shirk the task late. She will roll forward and if she can control the race either in front or outside the leader she will be hard to get past late.
COSTA BOMB (8) is from the inform Paul Preusker stable, she has won both her previous second-up races and was good fresh across the border. THAT RINGS A BELL (6) charged home to win fresh and then ran on well again last time to be narrowly beaten out of a place. This is no harder, look for her late.
MISS IDENTIFIED (4) has been getting home ok in her races across the border, she should get a soft run in transit.
Race 7: BM70 Handicap 1400m
THINK BABE (5) had to work too hard at the Bool, dashed to the front early in the straight but was run down late. He handles the soft tracks well enough but expect that he will not settle as close today. Look for him running on late.
KACHING (4) is a model of consistency, maps well again and will look the winner at some stage. They will just need to time his run perfectly when settling just off the leader’s. LORD TENNYSON (2) comes through the same race as our top pick at the Bool, he ran on well but just found one better on the day. BARTHELONA (1) gets some good weight relief with the claim, draws poorly but he will get back anyway. He will need everything to go right but can win if so.
Race 8: BM64 Handicap 1800m
HEAVENLY THOUGHT (12) was super at the Bool after coming very deep on the turn and running on hard. He handles the soft track ok and maps to settle closer, he is sure to get his first win out if maiden grade soon.
BIG BAD BAZ (11) was one of the many winners for the Weir team over the Warrnambool carnival, he will be further back than his stablemate but look for him late, he looks as though he could get further also. WIMBORNE (7) was good second-up, he has won third-up previously and is another that will be suited by the likely advantage to the run-on horses at this stage of the day. KING KABUTO (9) next best, but the inside alley may not be the place to be by the last.
