Canterbury Racing Tips - Fri Feb 15

We will be at Canterbury for another Friday night meeting.

Our Best of the meeting comes up early as we get behind #1 Judge Judi in the opening race.

There's some value on offer a little later in the card and we want to be on an $8 shot in Race 7.

Track: Good 4. Rail: Out 3m entire circuit.

Best Bet: Race 1 – JUDGE JUDI

Race 1: Fillies and Mares BM70 Handicap 1550m

JUDGE JUDI (1) led all the way at Gosford two starts back, then took on the boys when beaten as an easing favourite at Canterbury. She led there as well and was only run down in the last few strides, she did lose a plate as well. Hard to run past with the good claim.

SEAHAMPTON (2) certainly has the talent but is a little enigmatic, she will be giving her main danger a start but should be hitting the line hard, if she is at her best. LADY OF SHALOTT (3) has been off the scene for 5 weeks, connections advised that she would be ridden quieter last time and she didn’t have much luck in the run home. The small field suits. GENOVEFFA (6) looks next best but a minor place hope only. The topweight should be able to give us a flying start to the night.

Race 2: 3YO Maiden Handicap 1550m

Tough race. IN A WHILE (10) had no luck here a fortnight ago, she was handy to the speed on the fence before being held-up early in the straight. When she finally got clear she really attacked the line and looked a certainty beaten. She maps well again.

HOME SCENE (7) gets the blinkers off for the first time, he has placed at 4 of 8, was beaten less than a length here last time after trying to lead all the way. POP GIRL (6) has placed at all three this time in, she is on the quick back-up from last Saturday at Kembla where she wasn’t beaten far, she will also be up on the speed. REXX (4) was advised to be ridden quieter last start but was up in behind the leaders, he will keep coming in the straight one-paced.

Race 3: BM70 Handicap 1900m

It would be no surprise if any of the top 8 saddlecloths win this, the bottom one looks to be outclassed. CALIFORNIAFIREBIRD (2) had very little luck in the run here a fortnight ago when runner-up in a similar race. He was checked a couple of times before angling around runners and hitting the line well. He can go one better.

SEABABE (7) had her chance at Newcastle last time but meets that winner better in the weights here and is well drawn. VIA VENETO (4) will start near the top of the market but he looks a great risk He is still ye to win since his debut run, this will be start number 13, he was beaten last start as favourite in a race a few of these contested, was well back and wide to the turn before weakening right out. She was found to be lame but would prefer to see her bounce back before recommending. RED DUBAWI (3) is a last start winner in an easier race, he will get back and will need the speed to be on.

Race 4: BM76 Handicap 1550m

Another open affair where it wouldn’t shock to see any of them in the winner’s stall post-race. WAYANKA (2) is a dual acceptor, this looks an easier race than what he would have to tackle on Saturday. He had every chance at Randwick last time after a soft run in behind the speed, he maps to get that similar spot again here.

DOMED (3) finished behind him at Randwick last start but was making ground late and will appreciate the extra trip. NICOCHET (7) has been up for a long time, he has been closing late at his last coupe when placing. Needs everything to go right. BULL MARKET (6) won an easier race at Gosford last start comfortably when close to the speed, this is harder but he maps well in an open race.

Race 5: 3YO BM64 Handicap 1250m

Depending on how the track is playing, if it is favouring those on the speed then CALL ME ROYAL (4) looks one of the best of the night. She resumed here there weeks ago with an all the way win at maiden level, she was unwanted in the betting that night late which says to me she had a bit of condition on her and would have taken plenty from the run. If she can get on the bunny or outside the speed, she will be hard to run down.

BALLISTICA (3) will find this easier, she got a mile back here last time before hitting the line nicely. AUTUMN (8) is a stablemate to the top pick, she also is a last start winner at maiden level but did it running on. You can’t imagine that she will engage with the stablemate early and therefore will be giving her to big a start. LE LUDE (9) just missed a placing at her first go out of maiden grade last time but may have been suited by the way the race was run. She will be giving them a start.

Race 6: Nightsprint BM70 Handicap Heat 5 1200m

I AM A COOL KID (5) could not have been more impressive at Randwick on Australia day in a Highway race, he was resuming off a six-month break that day, jumped well and crossed to lead. He kicked hard into the straight and bolted in by 4.5m although he wasn’t pushed right out late. From the good gate he should be able to lead again and make it a hat-trick of wins.

SARGEANT (6) had the prefect run in transit when winning at Gosford recently in an easier race, he had to withstand a protest but did so. GOLDEN TYCOON (1) son on debut then led for a long way at Listed level before heading to the paddock. He has trialed well, Schofield goes on. HANDLE THE TRUTH (3) has won at both previous fresh runs, gets the good weight relief with the 3kg claim, he was in super form last prep. No official trials leading into this so see if the money comes for him.

Race 7: Evening Star BM76 Handicap 1100m

IT’S SO OBVIOUS (8) has good tactical speed, she had to do a stack of work fresh at Gosford to get outside the leader and found plenty late, then was beaten as the favourite in that feature at the same track after over-racing on the speed and was run down late. She should be able to land on the speed again and if she settles, will look the winner at some stage.

GRIMOIRE (11) is drawn off the track but only has one bend to deal with from the 1100m start here, he was good resuming after a very long break and has won both previous second-up runs. ORIENTAL RUNNER (5) gets a good claim here, a little concerning that he has not placed in three previous second-up runs but his effort in a harder race fresh was encouraging. MISS QUE (4) has a terrific record resuming as she is tonight and races very well here, she comes to the races for the first time for the Lees stable, she was formerly with the Pride yard. Watch the betting with her.

Race 8: Mares BM70 Handicap 1250m

Another even mares race to finish the card which will force many of us to play wide in the Quaddie. SEAGLASS (2) was well beaten when resuming but she was off the track without cover throughout and didn’t shirk the task. JMac goes on, rarely does he have them parked like that, she has had 6 weeks in between runs but has trialed. She looks a great each-way bet running on hard.

MOLLYFIELD (1) is a last start winner at Warwick Farm on the soft track, she led easily on that occasion and never gave anything else a chance with a 2.3 length win. She has the big weight but should be straight on the bunny. DIVINE BREEZE (3) gets the blinkers back on, she settled further back last time and found the line well. With that gear change and the inside draw, expect her to settle closer and she may need an ounce of luck getting off the inside when the runs come. FIRST READING (9) had been runner-up at her previous four runs before winning her maiden at Newcastle las start, she was on the speed before surging past the leader early in the straight for a comfortable win. Tough from the draw.
