Track: Good 4. Rail: True.
Best Bet: Race 4 – BULL MARKET
Race 1: 3YO BM64 Handicap 1900m
Tough race to start the day with every horse barring one looking to have a realistic chance, five Waller runners making it all the more difficult. LADY CUVEE (4) won her maiden fresh after running on hard, she hit the line hard again last time also. She needs everything to go rightt but will be finishing hard. SAVIGNE (7) ran on well two back and handled the heavy track ok last time, she is still a maiden which is a little concerning trying to win out of that grade. INHERIT (3) has placed at his last couple, ALIER (2) rounds out the top four, all Waller runners. He is on the quick back-up after winning his maiden at Newcastle last Saturday.
Race 2: 3YO Maiden Handicap 1250m
FRONT SIGHT (2) is lining up for start number two, he debuted here late last month, sat up outside the leader before hitting the front and then was nabbed late. With the blinkers on for the first time, he should be able to kick through and if he can lead and control the speed, will be hard to run down.
ROCK (1) has been runner-up at both career starts. He ran on well on debut at Wyong then was sent to the paddock, resumed at the Magic Millions carnival in the big maiden there where he stormed home from near last to go down by a length. This looks easier, look for him late. SISTER SLEDGE (3) is an interesting runner that has 42 weeks on the sidelines and now joins the Waterhouse/Bott team. She took on the best of her age group at her only two starts, has tactical speed and no doubt this stable will have her ready to fire fresh. HAIKILI (5) next best but a placing looks best for him.
Race 3: 3YO BM64 Handicap 1100m
LUCAND LAD (3) will find this easier than last time here, he was up outside the leader and was favourite in the betting, got past the leader in the straight and was only nabbed late right on the line. He was first-up and will take plenty from that run, from the good draw he should be the leader and be very hard to catch.
RIVIERA (5) was a good winner on debut and was promptly sent to the paddock. She resumed at Randwick and after getting well back, hit the line well. This looks a lot easier, he should settle a lot closer. DÉCOR (8) has the inside draw coming off a last start maiden win at Wyong, he may have been favoured by the tempo of the race leading all the way. He has trialed since after a month off, if she can lead, she may be hard to catch but looks better suited taking the sit. SPIRITUAL PURSUIT (9) also won her maiden last start up on the speed leading throughout. Plenty of speed here, the jocks will have decisions to make early!
Race 4: 4YO & Up BM70 Handicap 1550m
BULL MARKET (2) has had three runs in this prep, he had the cold sit on them last time at Gosford when a very short-priced favourite, before coming away for a dominant win. He has improved from run-to-run this campaign, this is harder but he draws perfectly to have a similar run as last start, camped right on the leaders.
BEAUTY KANSAS (5) has had a 5-week hiatus from the racetrack, he was well backed to beat the girls in an easier race last time when up on the speed. He maps well again and should be camped on the leaders early. MR GUSTAVO (1) gets the services of Robbie Dolan which looks a very positive jockey change, he has been up for a long time and is enigmatic, but at his best, he can win this. CLEVANICC (6) ran on hard in an easier race up the coast last time, if the speed is on, he may be the one finishing best at double figure odds.
Race 5: BM70 Handicap 1250m
This looks the most open race on the card and it wouldn’t shock me to see any of the ten numbers hit the semaphore board first. SEDITION (1) is well drawn and gets the services of in-form apprentice R Dolan with the claim. Expect him to settle in behind the leaders and he races well at this track. SYMI (3) is resuming with a stack of gear changes, she was a winner on debut before tackling much harder races at the back end of last prep. She has trialed well enough. LADY I AM (8) was fair through the line last time here out wide when that was not the place to be, the blinkers go back on. ROMANI GIRL (9) is also resuming, she has won two of three in her career and has tactical speed. She was only fair in her only official trial leading into this so happy to take her on.
Race 6: Nightsprint BM72 Handicap Heat 4 1100m
MISS CELEBRATION (6) resumed a Rosehill in a harder race last time, she was awkwardly away before getting up outside the speed. She was the first beaten and weakened badly but she did appear in the steward’s report as being distressed with a poor recovery. She was sent to the trials where she won well controlling the race from the front. She is better than that last run suggests.
VIRGILIO (5) has been ridden more positively at his last couple and it has paid dividends, from the good draw he shouldn’t be far away from the speed again. INVINCIBLE GANGSTA (4) is very consistent and will also be up on the speed, he was beautifully ridden in an easier race at Gosford last time to score at a short quote. CATMOSPHERE (2) is resuming and has won fresh previously, his trials have only been fair so look for any late money to see where his fitness levels are at.
Race 7: Evening Star BM76 Handicap 1550m
TRAFALGAR (1) loves it here at Canterbury (3:2-1-0) and gets the good claim. They lodged a CO with him last start to be ridden closer, in harder grade he led them up and stuck on well to place. Expect that he will go forward again here and look for cover racing at his favourite track.
WAYANKA (4) also races well here at the track (3:2-0-0) and is versatile. He had every chance at Randwick when resuming but he can take a few runs to wind-up in his preps. PIPELINE (7) was off the scene for a year, he is better than what he has shown in the two runs back. Likely to get back, he will need everything to go right. SIR BARB (6) wasn’t far away here three weeks ago, he was held-up early in the straight before attacking the line well.
Race 8: 4YO & Up BM70 Handicap 1900m
WELCOME ART (7) has won two on the bounce, his win at his latest run in the Cowra Cup was impressive, easing four-wide approaching the straight he showed a great turn-of-foot to put them away in a few strides it seemed and won by 3.3 lengths. Hard to line up that country form but he is racing well.
FABRICATOR (5) has the inside draw, he likes to race up on the speed in his races so if he begins well enough, he should be able punch through and lead. He stuck on well enough last time but he won’t want to make it into a sit sprint. SAN FRANCISCO (3) was poor on the heavy track here where he had excuses three starts back, but the two subsequent runs have been good. At his best, he only has one short sharp burst so needs to be saved for one run. HURRICANE HARBOUR (4) travelled north of the border las time after a month off, he was only fair up on the speed but looks better suited back on the smaller track here.
