Sandown Racing Tips – Sat Nov 16

We will be at Sandown this Sat.

Track: Good 4. Rail: True.

Best Bet: Race 2 – SOUND

===

Race 1: Merson Cooper Stakes 2YO Set Weights 1000m

It looks a tough start to the feature day of the year at Sandown with 11 of the 16 making their race track debut. TAGALOA (6) ran on well in the feature babies race over the carnival up the straight, GLENFIDDICH (2) comes through that same race and ran on well. He may be better suited around the bend and will get back. Watch for any money for those on debut, in particular HANSEATIC (3) and AWAY GAME (7).

Race 2: Sandown Cup Quality 3200m

SOUND (1) looks one of the better bets on the card. He was huge odds in the Melbourne Cup, over-raced badly through the early and middle stages in the back half of the field. He ran on well enough only beaten just under 4 lengths in a race where it was clearly advantageous to be closer to the speed.

Dangers:

HAKY (2) is now officially with the Archie Alexander stable, he was beaten out of sight when trying to lead all the way trying to make his way into the Cup via the Hotham Handicap. Will need it soft in front to turn it around. AZURO (4) comes through that same race, he saved ground and was only fair in the run home along the rails, placing but beaten a long way. WALL OF FIRE (5) never fired when well back in the same race, this is easier.

Race 3: Twilight Glow Stakes Set Weights and Penalties 3YO Fillies 1400m

XILONG (2) was coming off a crushing 5-length win in Adelaide two back going iinto the Listed event at Flemington on Cup Day. She was perfectly ridden and hit the front late before being nabbed close to the line. This looks no harder.

Dangers:

SOPHIA’S CHOICE (3) won her first two this prep before narrowly going down on the last day of the carnival. She will go forward at the start and probably needs cover, doubt she can sit wide at the 1400m in the breeze and win. PALURIEN (4) travels down from Sydney where she has won two of her last three, she will be giving them a start and will need luck from the inside draw. If anyone can do it from there it is Willow, he loves riding them for luck. CALIFORNIA SALTO (6) comes through the same race as the top pick, she will need to settle better.

Race 4: Sandown Stakes Quality 1500m

WIDGEE TURF (1) is so consistent and looks well in this type of race. HE will be mid-field in the run, when the pace is suitable, he can show an electrifying turn-of-foot at the back-end of his races. He is a winner at his only run here at the track, last time at the Valley he had his chance when beaten as favourite to narrowly go down, but lost no admirers.

Dangers:

GOLD FIELDS (2) was most impressive winning the Sale Cup last start, he likes to race on the speed but not sure if the lead is there for him coming back in trip today. MUSIC BAY (4) pulled up lame at the Valley last start after doing too much work three-wide on the speed, they wouldn’t be sending her back to the races today if she wasn’t ready to go. She may try and lead them up and will be very hard to run down if so. MANOLO BLAHNIQ (3) is very honest and on the seven-day back-up, he came very wide last week at Flemington when the winner was saving ground on the turn.

Race 5: Doveton Stakes Handicap 1000m

The top four saddlecloths look the main players in this. FAATINAH (1) has the class but has to lump the 60kg, he was brilliant resuming with a win following a trip to Dubai, last start in the Manikato he worked hard early to lead but was one of the first beaten. This is easier.

Dangers:

CRYSTAL DREAMER (2) is very underrated, he was good winning when resuming after having a year on the sidelines, last time at Caulfield he got further back than expected and should have finished closer after not having much luck late. VIRIDINE (4) may be favoured by the inside, sometimes that can be a real factor here on the Hillside track. He had excuses last start on day one of the Flemington carnival, forget he went around that day. EASY EDDIE (3) gets the winkers back on, he has been racing well in Sydney against some of the big names through their Spring Carnival.

Race 6: Kevin Heffernan Stakes WFA 1300m

HOME OF THE BRAVE (3) has been duper without winning this prep, he placed behind Brutal three back, led them up and was beaten under 2 lengths in the Sydney Stakes and last time led and was only beaten 1.7 lengths by Pierata in the Redzel. This is easier, he leads and wins.

Dangers:

D’BAI (4) is certainly one of the more interesting runners of the day, the Charlie Appleby trained gelding was a winner at Dubai en route from the UK, he was ok at his Australian debut in the All aged back in the Autumn. Watch the betting, but he will be giving the top pick a good start. RINGERDINGDING (6) has great closing speed but will be giving them a big start, he was disappointing through the back half of the Qld carnival and has been transferred out of the Waller stable. ORDER OF COMMAND (7) is very honest, this is his first go around here.

Race 7: Sandown Guineas 3YO Set Weights 1600m

DEFEND (9) has to take a huge step out of maiden grade into this but wow, what a win it was last time! He sat outside the leader at Cranbourne, pushed the go button at the top of the straight and won by 10!! Is he the clear leader?

Dangers:

PRETTY BRAZEN (10) won back-to-back races before going to Flemington on Cup Day, he got back in the run and hit the line hard. This looks an open race on paper and his best chance is if the top pick doesn’t get his own way early, Luke Currie goes back on. HEART OF PUISSANCE (4) is undefeated after two starts, it will be a tricky ride for Zahra who goes on for the first time as he will get back. Happy to lay him though if he starts at the top of the market. BANQUO (1) is probably going to have to do all the work outside the leader, he is racing well and his chances will increase if he doesn’t have to face the breeze.

Race 8: Zipping Classic WFA 2400m

SOUTHERN FRANCE (5) wasn’t suited the way the race was run in the Melbourne Cup, he only beate a few home. He may be better suited here coming back in trip and at WFA, expect a much better showing today at his second Australian run.

Dangers:

HUMIDOR (1) had been improving at each run this prep before the disappointment of not getting a start in the Cox Plate. He was only fair at Flemington in the Mackinnon on the last day of the carnival behind an impressive winner, he gets the blinkers on again. He has the class. VENTURA STORM (2) and GALLIC CHIEFTAIN (3) are both backing up from Flemington a week ago, they are both consistent but don’t win out of turn. Not a great edition of the race, but there has to be a winner!

Race 9: Summond Stakes Mares Set Weights and Penalties 1500m

NOIRE (1) has yet to run a place this time in but her three runs in Sydney were ok to start the prep. She then went to HQ on the wet track on Day one of the carnival and didn’t fire behind the star Kiwi Melody Belle. This looks easier, she will be getting home hard late.

Dangers:

SWEET SCANDAL (3) won in Sydney resuming before back-to-back placings since coming south. She had a tough run on Dup Day up on the speed but stuck on well to place, she maps beautifully from the good draw and should be on the speed for a long way. FIDELIA (4) has been ok this prep before racing very flat in the Empire Rose last time, there were a few horses that looked second rate in that behind the star mare from across the ditch. ONE MORE TRY (7) was only fair on Cup Day, she can improve coming back in trip and with the blinkers on.

Race 10: Eclipse Stakes Quality 1800m

SETTING SAIL (4) creates interest form the Charlie Appleby yard, he has been very consistent throughout his career in the UK, last start bolting in by more than 5 lengths. First-up off an 11-week break is ok for these Europeans, he may just be too good? The money trail will be interesting in the lead-up.

Dangers:

PACODALI (1) is very honest, you know what you will get with him. He will get back and run on hard but always needs everything to go right. PLEIN CIEL (3) was a Group Three winner back in the Autumn, he was only fair at his first two runs from a spell but looks to have turned it around with a nice effort at Flemington on Cup Day when closing hard late. SAVAHEAT (7) looks to have come back well with two wins since resuming, he will also be giving them a start. Happy to stay out of this one unless there is some serious money for the top pick.
