Geelong Racing Tips – Wed Oct 23
We will be at Geelong this Wednesday.
Track: Good 4. Rail: True.
Best Bet: Race 8 – SOUTHERN MOON
Race 1: BM70 Handicap 2400m
FIELDS OF YULONG (3) has to step out of maiden grade, he couldn’t have been any more impressive in that win at Mornington last time. He settled mid-field as favourite, improved wide on the track before showing a good turn-of-foot and braining them by 7 lengths! This is harder but if he brings that speed to this, he will win this.
OLYMPIC OATH (4) has had a long prep and is having his sixth start at his first campaign. He was ok at Listed level last time in what will be a good form race going forward. VELLASPRIDE (2) is consistent but really struggles to win, he has been second in 8 of his 18 career starts. He should be up on the speed for a long way but needs to stick his head out late. SUPER GIRL (6) gets the pacifiers off, she chased hard in an easier race last time.
Race 2: BM70 Handicap 1700m
Tough race on paper and barring the bottom one, anything could win. ZOUY’S COMET (1) resumed with a good win over a mile last start, will probably need the luck when the runs come off the inside draw. RIDGEWOOD DRIVE (3) was only fair behind him last time but meets him better at the weights. MACLAIREY (6) is a little one paced and won’t want it to be a sit and sprint affair, ANNUNCIATE (7) was ok last time after working hard to lead.
Race 3: BM70 Handicap 1200m
MR TIPLA (1) is resuming and has a terrific record when racing fresh (4-3-0-1). This is easier than what he was facing at the back-end of his last campaign, gets the good 4kg claim and although he will be giving them a start, looks suited by the small field.
CHICAGO CUB (4) has the fitness edge over his main rival, he has had two runs back this prep, both been good but he was entitled to win last time in similar grade. Happy to take him on if he starts at the top of the market. FLY FOR YULONG (2) is an interesting runner for the Hayes/Hayes/Dabernig team having his first Australian start, he won two races in Ireland before coming here. NONE BETTER (3) resumes for the Mitch Freedman team, he has been off the scene a long time but has a great record when fresh.
Race 4: Dual Choice Plate BM84 Handicap 1200m
RUBAN BLEU (6) had no luck last time, he finished in front of Chicago Cub that goes around in the previous, look for how that formline marries up. When he is saved for one run, he really does have a nice turn-of-foot.
BIG REEL (3) bolted in when leading throughout last start, this is harder and not sure the easy lead is there. BLUE TYCOON (4) won by more than 4 lengths two starts back and was ok in the Weary Dunlop at Ballarat last time, huge jockey change from Martin Harley to Willow. GIMME STRENGTH (5) is a last start winner and will get an economical run off the inside draw.
Race 5: Black Pearl Stakes Fillies and Mares Set Weights and Penalties 1200m
INTO THE ABYSS (2) didn’t have much luck two back at Listed level then came out and brained them at Warwick Farm last time. It is a little hard to line-up the form lines but her acceleration was breathtaking last start after sitting up on the speed.
ISLAND DAZE (3) has had one run this time in, she sat up on the speed and weakened late in a race where the tempo suited those back in the field. SMART COUPE (1) is fresh and has not missed a place in all five previous first-up runs, she will be giving them a start and probably needs to be ridden for luck from the inside draw. GINA’S HOPE (5) was good winning an easier race last time, happy to take her on here after she had the gun run there and only won narrowly.
Race 6: BM78 Handicap 1500m
I love the fact that this is the first leg of the Quaddie as we can go one out with HARBOUR VIEWS (2). He is a star, from his maiden win at the Bool over the carnival to last start resuming at Caulfield where he ran over the top for a dominant win, all four wins have been brilliant. He will get back and round them up. Beetroot Williams has a real good one here.
IMPI (8) looks the obvious danger, he is also undefeated after three starts and resumed for a most dominant win in an easier race than this. He will go forward and be on the speed but won’t know what hit him late when the best of the day steams over the top late. MR EXCLUSIVE (6) was only beaten just over a length behind the top selection, he hit the line well but hard to see a reversal of the result. MAIN STAGE (4) doesn’t have great numerical form but comes back in trip from competing in Country cups of late.
Race 7: Geelong Cup 2400m
PRINCE OF ARRAN (3) placed in the Melbourne Cup last year and that is the goal again in 2019. He resumed in the Herbert Power where he was very one paced but kept grinding away after a perfect run in transit to narrowly be defeated. It was a gap job to third, he looks to have settled in well again here in Oz.
STEEL PRINCE (8) has already qualified for the Cup in 2 weeks time, he missed a run last week when scratched at the barrier which is a little concerning. He was flying last prep and has come back well, they knew the goal at the start of the prep and have been working towards that. RED GALILEO (7) is an interesting runner for the Sheik having his first Australian run, he was last seen in the Ebor in the UK 2 months ago where he wasn’t beaten far. He obviously has class, but has only won 3 races in 41 starts! HAKY (9) was well supported at his Australian debut in the Herbert Power, he led and ran them along and was the first beaten. He is obviously better than that.
Race 8: Geelong Classic 3YO Set Weights and Penalties 2200m
It looks a four-horse race, I would be very surprised if one of the top four saddlecloths didn’t salute. SOUTHERN MOON (4) is currently the third favourite for the VRC Derby, he was sent out after debuting at the Bool carnival. He placed at his last two since resuming, went to Donald in an easier maiden and was sent round at ridiculously short odds and couldn’t have been more impressive. This is harder, but he will be winning this.
LONG JACK (2) was ok behind Warning last time, that horse ran a bottler on the weekend. The blinkers go on, just a question where he will get to in the run from the extreme draw.
WHISPERED (1) comes through that same race, he was ok but has won two races. RELUCENT (3) travels down from Sydney as a maiden after five starts, he chased hard last time but a little query out past the mile to this trip.
Race 9: BM64 Handicap 1400m
SOPHIA’S CHOICE (11) failed on the heavy track on debut and was sent to the paddock, she then resumed at Cranbourne and sat three-wide the trip without cover and brained the girls at maiden level. This is harder but she looks to have come back a much better filly, drawn well she will be up on the speed for a long way.
ALMIGHTY GOLD (4) will be better for his run resuming, he sat wide on the speed and was well beaten but is better drawn here and looks suited getting out to the 1400m. LIVING THE DREAM (3) sat wide on the speed to win his maiden last time, that followed a run where he had no luck resuming. SPARTAN FLAME (2) ran on hard resuming, he got out to a mile last prep and handles all conditions.
