Flemington Racing Tips – Sat Feb 29th
We will be at Flemington this Saturday.
Track: Good 4. Rail: Out 2m entire circuit.
Best Bet: Race 9 – BIG NIGHT OUT
Race 1: Fillies and Mares BM84 Handicap 1100m
DIAMOND EFFORT (4) will start the shortest price favourite for the day, those that like to take them in at the likely tomato sauce odds, she should get you off to a flying start. She was firat-up at Caulfield, sat parked behind the speed and when asked, showed a brilliant turn-of-foot and charged homer for a 4-length win. She will only need to repeat that to be winning that.
QUEEN ANNABEL (2) will have to improve on her second-up record but there was a lot to like about her fresh run at the Valley. She was well back and held-up when the runs came, got out at the top of the straight and flashed home beaten the narrowest possible margin.
STREET ICON (6) was ok off a wide run resuming then went to Tasmania for a listed race and was well beaten. Back on the mainland, she should be carving over to sit on the speed. DES MOINES (7) is first-up and has placed at both previous fresh runs. Her last two runs were up the straight her before going to the paddock, placed at one and was most unlucky at the other.
Race 2: Roy Higgins Quality 2600m
DABIYR (2) showed more tactical speed when getting out in trip last start to win at the Valley. He sat up outside the leader and stuck on ell, was a little difficult to ride late but won well. Willow goes on.
KING OF LEOGRANCE (4) is having his second start since transferring over to the Danny O’Brien yard, he kept coming in the straight at Caulfield when resuming and will be better for the run. NAVAL WARFARE (5) was runner-up when going back to Sydney last start, he led for a long way at the starts prior here at the track. He will be hard to run down as always. HIGH BRIDGE (3) had been racing well but never got into the race last start at Caulfield. He has had a month between runs, will be giving them a start.
Race 3: Festival of Racing 2YO Set Weights and Penalties 1000m
VANGELIC (10) was double figure odds on debut at the Kenso track 2 months ago, she showed speed but was pressured and headed in the run. He ran on well, wining comfortably with a big gap to third. Willow on!
TIME IS PRECIOUS (4) won on debut at Randwick back in October, she led and stuck on well to win when the pressure was applied from the outside. UNSTOPPABELLE (6) was ok from a mile back in a Blue Diamond Prelude, she placed at her only run up the straight and should be hitting the line hard. Watch for any money for the two n debut, in particular ILOVEMYSELF (3).
Race 4: Frances Tressady Stakes Fillies and Mares Set Weights and Penalties 1400m
SYLVIA’S MOTHER (2) was an easing favourite at Caulfield three weeks ago but could not have been any more impressive. She was mid-field before nudging her way clear in the straight, ran on hard to get up narrowly late with a good gap to third. She is undefeated second-up from three attempts and is undefeated at the track.
SPANISH WHISPER (1) is the class runner of the field and probably doesn’t get n too bad under these conditions. She was a winner last time when was here over the track and trip, has trialed well enough and can sprint well fresh. FIDELIA (6) has not missed a place second-up, she is very one dimensional however and will be giving them a big start. MAMZELLE TESS (5) was ok behind the top pick last start after being forced to fab wide and kept coming in the straight.
Race 5: Shaftesbury Avenue Handicap 1400m
ROCK (3) is a dual acceptor between here and Sydney, he is resuming today off only some fair trials it is fair to say, but he did win three in a row to start the campaign last time in. He didn’t have much luck in the Epsom then was flat here in the Cantala mile to start the carnival.
AGE OF CHIVALRY (1) clearly goes on top if he doesn’t race here. Was good in a harder race resuming behind Anaheed, not sure of what to make of that form line though? He has won two from three when second-up although all his wins have been at Caulfield and Sandown, he has raced well here in the past.
YULONG JANUARY (4) is very speedy, he has been given a 5-week freshen up going into this. His last two runs at the track and trip have been wins, will be hard to run down if left alone in front. Watch how the track is playing in the previous two turn races to see if there is any advantage to be up on the speed. MORVADA (7) beat home Yulong last time but meets him 3kg worse at the weights here.
Race 6: Bob Hoysted Handicap 1000m
GOD OF THUNDER (4) was an easing favourite when resuming at Randwick a fortnight ago, after getting a soft rails run he was held-up early in the straight, got clear late and produced the best overall sectionals of the day. He has a good record second-up but is having his first go up the straight.
EMBRACE ME (8) comes back in trip after placing behind smart WFA horses in the Australia stakes over 6 furlongs. Last time she was here up the straight she had no luck at a vital time and should have won.
SOOTHING (1) charged home to win here at her first go up the straight before going o the paddock. She has a great record fresh, look for her late. FABERGINO (6) is an interesting runner over from WA and resuming off a 2-month break. Her last two wins have been at Listed level but need to see her here once first, especially up the straight. I expect her to be a big drifter in the betting a great lay.
Race 7: Australian Guineas Set Weights 1600m
ALABAMA EXPRESS (3) comes through a different formline winning the WFA C.F.Orr last time at G1 level. Admittedly it wasn’t the strongest G1 WFA you will ever see but he was dominant after being forced to sit three-wide no cover throughout. I like the map, back against his own age at set weights, he looks to have come back well. More importantly I am keen to lay the first two over the line in the lead-up (Alligator Blood and Catalyst) where the tempo was bordering on farcical?
CHENIER (7) was super in the lead-up, sat back on the rails off a long break and chased hard in a race where the leaders walked and it was virtually impossible to run down class horses when they ran those times. ALLIGATOR BLOOD (1) has the cult following and has only ever lost one race, the Caulfield Guineas narrowly last Spring. His win here was good in the C.S.Hayes but it really was just a sit and sprint home. CATALYST (4) is a star Kiwi that was brave in defeat sitting outside Alligator Blood last time, he stuck on well (but did have every chance) but very happy to take him on in this field, until he proves himself in Oz.
Race 8: Blamey Stakes Set Weights and Penalties 1600m
ADMIRAL’S JOKER (3) is a very lightly raced 7YO from the in-form Kylie Vella stable. HE ran on well resuming without ever looking the winner, then hit the line hard here last time. Should be fully wound up for this.
FIFTY STARS (2) won this race last year, he was running on well at the back-end when resuming and wasn’t beaten far. Has to be included in all bet types. RINGERDINGDING (5) was only fair last start when settling closer, I would rather him ridden cold and relying on the tempi being genuine, he has outstanding closing speed. NIGHT’S WATCH (7) gets Olly on replacing JMac, he was only fair when resuming in the C.F.Orr but will have taken plenty from the run. Ut’s been a long time between wins for him though.
Race 9: BM90 Handicap 1200m
BIG NIGHT OUT (11) was a real eye-catcher when resuming here off along break, he got a long way back and stormed home late out wide to just miss the placings. He was a winner last prep when second-up, also flashing home late, look for him weaving between runners over the last furlong. He looks to have come back well.
JUST HIFALUTIN (1) is a two-time winner up the straight, he continued his unbeaten record second-up last start winning at Sale. She looks to be drawn out in the better part of the track, look for her late. PREZADO (3) loves it up the straight here, it’s the only place I could entertain the thought of backing him, he grows another leg here. CHICAGO CUB (7) was favourite and led all the way here up the straight last time in an easier race, expect him to try and do the same here.
