Caulfield Racing Tips – Sat Aug 17
We will be at Caulfield this Saturday.
Track: Soft 6. Rail: Out 10m entire circuit.
Best Bet: Race 8 – MYSTIC JOURNEY
Race 1: BM78 Handicap 1100m
PIPPIE (12) looks a good thing to start us off on the right foot for the day, she has only been to the races four times but has shown plenty. She bolted in by 5 on debut, contested black type racing at start 3 then went to the paddock. She resumed in Qld and led throughout for a very easy win, she should kick up and find the lead early here and be very hard to run down. The only issue may be the inside if she doesn’t begin well?
GODODDIN (10) has won 2 of 4 this time in, she appeared to have every chance last time up the straight but wasn’t beaten far in what has become a very good form reference.
CONDOR HEROES (8) was good resuming and handles the wet tracks well, he gets the blinkers on for the first time but will be giving the top pick a big start. TONY NICCONI (2) has some tactical speed and does race well here at the track, he probably needs an improving track though.
Race 2: Fillies and Mares BM84 Handicap 1700m
There only looks to be a few chances on paper, TORYJOY (1) gets the number one saddlelcoth and the number one selection. She ticks so many boxes, handles the wet, well draw, has versatility and her only poor run in the last four was when she settled further back two starts ago and never got into the race. The only query may be that she is having her first go here at Caulfield, for that reason I expect the bookies to be gambling with her late.
BENITOITE (2) was beautifully ridden by Olly to score here last time, he saved a stack of ground on her and the win was comfortable in the end. She has been up a while in what is her first prep but is racing so well. RAT WITH GOLDTOOTH (5) looks the other winning chance, she has a terrific overall record and is so consistent, she can map anywhere and I expect that she will be midfield in the run. She was beaten favourite at Mildura in the Cup at her latest where she was finishing hard. PAINT THE TOWN TWO (6) next best but for minor spots only.
Race 3: Handicap 1600m
NEW UNIVERSE (6) is one of only four horses in the field that is not a recent addition to Australian racing. He is a consistent type and you know what you will get with him, he will get back and run on hard. His last start win at The Valley was good and this looks no harder.
Tough race with so many unknowns. Lloyd Williams has three runners so no doubt one of them will be assigned the prole of pacemaker, watch for any money for them, most notably DOUGLAS MACARTHUR (5). He is having his Oz debut after having 2 years off, he was racing the best of his age group in the UK before coming here. CAPTAIN COOK (3) and YULONG PRINCE (2) are both new additions to the Waller yard rom OS, the betting late here will be the best indicator.
Race 4: BM84 Handicap 1400m
AGE OF CHIVALRY (6) resumed at the Valley in this grade last start, he was poorly away and knuckled at the start, settled mid-field and was held-up early in the straight. He got to within a length late but was racing tight, he should have probably won the race. He has good tactical speed and usually races on the speed, with a better getaway he should be leading all the way.
SMART ELISSIM (5) also has good tactical speed, he has been good at his last three but the spot outside the leader looks to be his, and hard to see him running down the top pick if he has to sit outside it. SHOT OF IRISH (3) was a good winner at Sandown last time in easier grade after working in the run, he maps to be behind the leader but may need a little luck off the inside draw. He will need everything to go right. ROX THE CASTLE (2) also has peed and it will be interesting to see how they ride him, he is 2/2 when racing second-up and I think he will be best served here to take a sit.
Race 5: Vain Stakes 1100m
DUBIOUS (1) is resuming and has a perfect record when racing fresh. He was runner in the Magic Millions, had a torrid run in the Slipper before winning at Group Two level in Brisbane over the carnival. He has had a good hit-out the trials leading into this and looks ready to go.
BIVOUAC (2) looks the main danger, he is also resuming and wasn’t knocked around in a recent trial. He by-passed the Slipper in the Autumn and took out the Kindergarten Stakes impressively, he looks to have a big season ahead of him. They look the two class runners of the field. STAR SURPRISE (4) is still on his first prep, he will find this a lot tougher than his last two wins. SEBRAKATE (3) showed plenty of speed in his only run last prep to win up the straight at Flemington, not sure where he will get to in the run from the inside gate.
Race 6: Quezette Stakes 3YO Fillies Set Weights and Penalties 1100m
SIZZLEFLY (9) won her first two starts by big margins, was caught wide here at start three but stuck on well. John Allen jumps on, he will no doubt ride conservatively but she has so much talent, I think she will just run over the top.
BROOKLYN HUSTLE (8) was close-up in the Blue Diamond after storming home from the back, she was sent to the paddock and has trialed brilliantly recently. She looks to have come back well. CHEER LEADER (6) is very speedy and resumes from the wide gate, expect her to go forward early. She may struggle though if she is not first across to the fence. EXHILARATES (4) is the Magic Million winner from last season, she was last seen in the Slipper where she never got into the race. She has trialed very quietly in readiness for this.
Race 7: Regal Roller Stakes Handicap 1200m
BEGOODTOYAMOTHER (9) is an exciting gelding resuming, he won all five races last prep and a few of them by huge margins. He has tactical speed but doesn’t have to lead, he did find the front last time here before going to the paddock and bolted in by 5. He may be better suited over another furlong but he may just be too quick for them late here. He is an excitement machine.
ANTAH (8) is also resuming, he is likely to be giving them a start but there may be some interesting tactics here, I can see the speed on and he may be the one finishing best. BEHEMOTH (7) has the fitness edge on his side, he resumed at Morphetville and was beaten favourite in the Lightning but wasn’t disgraced, he will get back but the small field should suit. HAUNTED (5) is a must for all exotics off the inside gate where he should get a soft run, he gets the blinkers on again. Good race.
Race 8: P.B Lawrence Stakes WFA 1400m
All eyes will be on the resuming MYSTIC JOURNEY (11) here after her dominant win in the All Star Mile before going to the paddock. She stepped up every start last prep, she has versatility and when you consider that Hartnell is the second favourite, she looks one of the best bets I have ever seen and can’t believe they are betting black odds? He is favourite for a Cox Plate and here we are getting even money! This is about as vulnerable as she will be, but the field just is not exactly a WFA classic. Load up, stand her out in Quads, all-up her, whatever you need to do.
FIFTY STARS (5) will probably need the run but will run on well, CLIFF’S EDGE (4) was ok fresh but has a better record second-up and I suppose we must throw HARTNELL (1) in the exotics, he is now a 9YO, has only won 2 of 11 fresh and will want further. I would be shocked if they didn’t take a stand against him late.
Race 9: Mares Handicap 1100m
Hopefully you stood out the star mare in the second last leg of the Quaddie as we will need to be going very wide here. There does look to be a bit of speed but hopefully ALL OVER BOSSANOVA (2) can cross from out wide and settle out wide the leader and be able to control the race. She was up the straight resuming and has won second-up. CRACK THE CODE (3) comes through that same race and had no luck at a vital stage, MISS IANO (6) was a good last start winner here last time but has been up for an eternity. CAUSEWAY GIRL (10) is resuming and is undefeated fresh, she won a recent trial but was pushed out in doing so.
