Canterbury Racing Tips – Wed Aug 7
We will be at Canterbury this Wednesday.
Track: Soft 5. Rail: Out 8m entire circuit.
Best Bet: Race 6 – GOD OF THUNDER
Race 1: 3YO Maiden Handicap 1580m
FROSTY ROCKS (1) has placed at two of three career runs, he was up on the speed in a much better race time and wasn’t good enough. Thye elected to ride him further forward that day, I expect they will do the same here. This is easier.
CAPTAIN STARDUST (2) has placed at all three of his starts, he over-raced last time back in the field before hitting the line as a beaten favourite. WAR BARON (4) comes through the same race as the top pick and had no luck. He has the talent but has had enough chances and need to start seeing some returns. TISANE (6) showed speed on debut at Wyong and wasn’t beaten far, this is harder.
Race 2: BM72 Handicap 1900m
ISLAND MISSILE (2) is down in grade after never getting into the race last time, that has proven a very good form reference going forward with two subsequent winners coming from it. He will get back, sometimes in these small fields horses like him can be tricky to map as the tempo is usually not known.
SEEINGISBELIEVING (3) has had seven starts this prep and not finished further back than second. He was well backed here last time when sitting outside the leader and narrowly went down. Expect him to go forward again. SNIPPETSPEED (5) is on the 7-day back-up, he was OK in that race at Warwick Farm and usually races well here at the track. MONASTERIO (1) is also on the quick back-up, as always with this stable if they bet up, you would rather be with them then against them.
Race 3: 3YO Maiden Plate 1100m
A lot will depend on which/if any of the emergencies get a start and there will be no confidence until race morning. ROME (4) was a real eye-catcher at the trials recently, he is resuming off an 18-week break and win number one surely isn’t far away.
MO’S CROWN (2) is a recent trial winner, he was ok at his debut then was outclassed in the Pago Pago last time. If DEFERENCE (12) and/or GET HITCHED (13) get a start they come right into calculations, if not I would be very surprised if one of the top two picks didn’t salute.
Race 4: Fillies and Mares BM72 Handicap 1580m
Tough race!! Only a small field and I give all but the 7 a realistic chance of winning. SELES (1) is a back marker that hasn’t had a lot of luck this prep. She looks suited coming back against her own sex and the small field suits. Look for her late but she will need the right tempo.
MOANA JEWEL (2) was off the map here at Canterbury last start. She was held-up at the top of the straight before shifting off heels and producing some good sectionals late. With even luck she will be hard to beat and I expect her to be well backed.
HIGH LOW BET (5) comes through a hot form race at Randwick last start which has already produced three subsequent winners. She prefers the sting out of the ground so any rain around will assist. MONEGAL (3) loves it at the mile and is very consistent, they should be riding her up on the speed.
Race 5: BM72 Handicap 1250m
HAVIN’ FUN (12) is a newly turned 3YO filly taking on the older horses here. She has only been to the races three times, winning her maiden two back. She was at Saturday grade last start when having the gun run, she maps beautifully again and looks well in against some of these more seasoned campaigners.
TOUCH OF MINK (9) is very consistent, she will be giving them a start but did run on well when resuming.
ADANA (5) is still yet to win out of maiden grade, he is resuming and has placed at two of three when fresh. METAMORPHIC (2) is another consistent type but doesn’t win out turn, put him in for your minor spots in exotics only.
Race 6: BM72 Handicap 1100m
GOD OF THUNDER (7) is resuming and looked really good in a recent barrier trial at Rosehill. He was mid-field I the run before hitting the line well without any real pressure applied. He was outclassed at Listed level before going to the paddock, the wide gate looks the only hurdle.
All the dangers seem to be resuming as well. CALABASAS (6) has been off the scene for almost two years, a huge watch on the betting with him, Nash gets the ride. ROOSEVELT (2) comes back as a gelding after having the chop, he has trialed well enough and they do like to back recently gelded horses. MILITARY ACADEMY (8) is also fresh, this looks a great race to wait and see what the betting is doing late, albeit very confident with the top pick, especially if there is money for him. Quite often the mounting yard smart money will filter through and give us a better guide.
Race 7: Colts Geldings and Entires BM72 Handicap 1580m
SILENT EXPLORER (1) loves the sting out of the ground and is a two-time winner from three attempts at the track and distance. He has good tactical speed and should be able to kick through and lead for a long way from the good draw.
McMAHON (4) is racing well this prep but will certainly be giving the top pick a big start. If the speed is on, he will finish as good as any. FLYING PIERRO (3) doesn’t have a great record at the track but is drawn to get an economical run. If they ride him for luck he can win. ARISTOGRATS (10) comes through a similar form line, he is another that will need the speed on. It all sets up for the top pick, if he gets the soft lead load up again in the run.
