Canterbury Racing Tips – Wed May 22
We will be at Canterbury this Wednesday.
Track: Good 4. Rail: Out 3m entire circuit
Best Bet: Race 3 – BARE NAKED LADY
Race 1: 2YO Colts and Geldings Handicap 1250m
AEECEE BEAU (3) has been to the races once, it was in a harder race than this and he wasn’t beaten far. He settled third at the Kenso track that day, I expect that stepping up to the 1250m and off the inside alley, jock Sam Clipperton will be kicking up to try and lead all the way. He was good n debut and won’t have to improve much.
KORDIA (2) was in a similar race on debut, ran on well at big odds and looks to have his fair share of ability, no shock about that with a Godolphin 2YO. BIGBOYROY (1) comes through that same race and had a soft run, it’s hard to see him turning the tables here. VAPORIZING (10) got further back last time than what he did resuming, he has versatility and look clearly next best and possibly the only other winning chance.
Race 2: 2YO Fillies Maiden Handicap 1250m
SINGLE BLONDE (1) was well beaten by the very smart Libertini at Scone last time, she gets the blinkers off and she has the good wide draw to push on at the start. She will have to be better at the back end but the gear change may enable that.
MADDI ROCKS (2) was well in the market on debut but did appear to have every chance, she once again faces the fillies and I am not sure that she will get the same good run so am happy to take her on if she starts at the top of the market. BORN TO PLAY (4) is on debut and has trialed well enough, PALURIEN (7) is on debut from the Cummings yard and he hasn’t had many slow babies this season.
Race 3: 3YO BM70 Handicap 1250m
BARE NAKED LADY (3) is coming back from Scone after being well beaten in the Guineas there, she was forced to sit outside the leader and was one of the first beat but actually didn’t drop off as many had expected and was only beaten a little over 2 lengths. Back on the smaller track here, she will roll forward and be very hard to run down.
NOTATION (4) travels up from Vic fresh, she has only been beaten out of a place once in her five career starts and that was at Listed level. A little concerning at her first go in this direction but she certainly has the talent. STELLA SEA SUN (7) is a last start winner against the girls at 64 grade, she was a very short price that day and had the gun run. Harder here against the boys and drawn wide, she looks a good risk. BELLADEEL (6) is resuming after a short 5-week break in which he has been gelded, he has trialed very quietly but maps to mid-field and giving the top pick a start.
Race 4: Fillies and Mares BM72 Handicap 1550m
AUSTRIA (9) won her maiden across the ditch in NZ, she then went to the paddock and returned here in Oz for the Waller yard. She chased hard but seemed to have her chance, then went to Scone over the carnival and ran on hard from a mile back. She may not be suited back on the smaller track here but maps to b e a little closer. Look for her late.
IMPETUOSO (8) is a last start winner at Hawkesbury, she was beautifully ridden and found the front just inside the furlong and came away for a good win. WARUNA (4) was here last start and well in the market, she got back and made some ground but should settle closer from the better draw after getting bumped at the start last time. THE CLOSER (3) was at the Bool over the carnival three weeks ago, she was beaten as favourite that day but had excuses when appearing in the steward’s report with an irregular heartbeat.
Race 5: 4YO and Up BM78 Handicap 1250m
RAFHA’S CHOICE (4) will find this harder than his win at Wagga over the carnival, but it was hard not to be impressed with the ease of his victory. He sat third two wide, took over at the furlong and dashed away for a soft win. He will go forward again and sit outside the lead, if he can control the race, he should be able to kick clear at the top of the straight.
METAMORPHIC (2) was up for a long time last spell but was very consistent, he has placed at three of four when racing fresh. He trialed well recently but will get back in the run. MEDOVINA (9) will also get back in the field, she has been good at two runs this spell but has had her chances. KOTINOS (8) will lead or the spot behind the leader and should run a big race from there fresh.
Race 6: Colts Geldings and Entires BM70 Handicap 1550m
SONAREE (6) travels up the Hume after a good start to this prep, he won by five three back and has been close-up at two runs since. He has good tactical speed and is not new to the Sydney way of going.
BE MINDFUL (1) has been up for a while but is racing so well, he is a winner three times this prep but this is not his favourite track. He will probably get back and needs everything to go right. REDEMPTION ROAD (2) is very consistent and will be up on the speed, he had every chance last time but beat the rest of the field comfortably. WARSET (8) won an easier race at big odds two back, then didn’t have much luck at Newcastle last time before hitting the line well. He was favoured the way the race was run once out, happy to take him on here.
Race 7: BM64 Handicap 1900m
Tough race to finish. BAAED (1) has won three times this prep including his last two, he has the big weight taking on the older horses but will be making his own luck up on the speed. There are no stars here and he knows how to win, if he can control the tempo up outside the speed, he will be har to run past.
HOSTWIN EPANOUI (7) has shown improvement at his last couple and draws well.
COSTAS (9) had every chance at his first go out of maiden grade last start, this looks easier but he has a horror draw. SAVIGNE (12) has to step out of maiden grade here, still without that first win. She probably should have won last time and protested unsuccesfully, maybe wait until she gets back to maiden grade.
