Canterbury (Fri)

Canterbury Racing Tips -Fri Jan 17

We will be at Canterbury this Friday.

Track: Good 4. Rail: Out 3m entire circuit.

Best Bet: Race 8 – QUANTICO

Race 1: Maiden Handicap 1100m

AZOUSTIC (1) is a dual acceptor between here and Gosford on Thursday, he was slowly away when resuming at Gosford before running on well and then hit a roadblock late. Should have finished closer. Obviously watch for any money from this stable for the confidence to rise.

KUZCO LAD (2) gets the blinkers off for the first time, he placed at all three runs at his first prep and will be up on the speed. His trials have been good enough. OUR FRAULEIN (8) is resuming for the in-form John O’Shea stable, didn’t show much at her first run but has trialed well enough. The stable is flying. GRINDELWALD (4) is a debutant from the Gai/Bott yard, has been given plenty of time for this with 6 trials dating back to June last year. Watch the betting.

Race 2: 2YO Maiden Handicap 1200m

Tough race with so many unknowns, only three of the twelve have been to the races before. Happy to be with one of the first-starters as those that have raced have not impressed, watch the betting in particular with PRAGUE (7), SPOKESMAN (9) and EASY CAMPESE (4). MAJOR ARTIE (6) looks the best of the raced brigade, he can improve with the blinkers on off a placing on debut. He did have every chance that day and was beaten out of sight.

Race 3: Fillies and Mares BM70 Handicap 1550m

SHE’S IDEAL (6) has placed at both runs since resuming, she was sent forward when wide early fresh to sit parked and then came from further back last time showing her versatility. She takes on the girls here and should be handy in the run from the good draw.

Looks an open race with any one of the seven a chance. SELES (1) finished mid-field last start when second-up in a harder race against the girls, looks a great jockey change from Dolan to JMac. CELTIC LOVE (4) is on the 7-day back-up from Gosford last week where she was beaten the smallest of margins, she is likely to be giving them a start so look for her late. SATIN RAIN (7) ran on hard from a mile back resuming, has to jump from 1000m to 1550m second-up which is a little worrying but should be a lot closer to the speed.

Race 4: 3YO Fillies Handicap 1100m

DEEP CRYSTAL (1) debuted here at the track a fortnight ago, began well but was hooked early to be behind the leaders on the rails. She was held-up early I the straight then hit the line well, most of the time without much galloping room. O’Hara off, Collett on, if she jumps well again, I don’t expect him to be so negative.

MINI BOOM (6) is resuming off a 7-week break, he has good tactical speed as we saw when placing at two of her first four runs. She has won two trials leading into this, expect her to roll forward early. JOLIETTE (2) is also resuming for Waller, she placed at both runs last campaign and showed she can do it at both ends. Runner-up in a recent Warwick Farm barrier trial. Watch for any money for the first starter for the Godolphin yard PHEMONOE (5).

Race 5: BM72 Handicap 1100m

INTRINSIC (3) had been contesting harder races last prep including a Ramornie Handicap where she was only beaten half a length. Resuming today with JMac steering, she was up for a long time last prep so would be keen to see some money for her. Likely to get back in the run, she looks the best horse but may need the favours.

KAWAIKINI (4) gets the blinkers again, she didn’t have much luck when held-up at a vital stage last time in a harder race against the girls. She should settle closer with the gear change and the good low draw. SOUL STAR (6) was a real eye-catcher at the Valley when resuming, her second-up record isn’t great but looks well in at this level. MONTE DITTO (7) had been off the track for more than a year before resuming on the Kenso track last time, she chased hard late and was good through the line but has obviously had some issues.

Race 6: 4YO and Up BM70 Handicap 1900m

DE VALERA (10) ran on hard to win a similar races here at the track last time, he does have to carry the extra weight but he races well here. This looks no harder, Avdulla sticks with the ride and the O’Shea team is airborne.

MAGIC OVER THE BAY (8) was heavily backed to win at Warwick Farm last start and didn’t let his backers down. He settled well back and attacked the line well winning comfortably. This looks no harder but does have to carry the extra kg’s. SISCO BAY (7) has placed at his last three, he got too far back last start but expect him to settle closer here form the good gate and Tommy Berry taking the ride. If the first emergency AUSTRIA (13) gets a run she comes right into calculations for Waller and JMac.

Race 7: Evening Star – 5YO and up BM72 Handicap 1550m

SUPREME POLARITY (8) has been up for a long time but is racing so consistently and you know what you will get with him. He is a front-running type that looks suited with eth 4kg claim, if they leave him alone mid-race, go again in the run. He was run down and had every chance here last time but there was a good gap to third.

WEEKEND AFFAIR (11) had only been racing fairly this prep but there was a lot to like about his last start here at Canterbury. Settling a long way back on the fence, he was held-up early in the straight still a mile off them before attacking the line when clear, getting into third late. MUGATOO (2) will start near the top of the market and creates interest, a two-time winner in England, the import has had 6-months between runs and has trialed fairly. Happy to let him go around once and see what he has to offer. DALMATIA PRINCE (1) showed a great turn-of-foot to win last start coming from last to first in one sweeping run. Berry rides for Avdulla and does have to lump 60.5 kg’s which is a concern. Look for him late.

Race 8: BM70 Handicap 1250m

QUANTICO (12) was very well backed into flip of the coin odds when resuming here two weeks ago to win his maiden. He settled up outside the speed, took a little while to balance up in the straight but once he did, went past the leader and was doing best on the line. JMac retains the ride, drawn well and out in trip, he looks to have plenty of upside and will be hard to run down if he lands on the bunny.

LORD HERON (7) is an interesting runner down from Port Macquarie. He bolted in at Moree in an easier race two back then went north to Brisbane last time and was run down in front. Has had 7-weeks between runs but has won a trial recently. NAPSTER (11) ran on hard to win his maiden here at the track last start, a little concerning with the inside gate here as he got well back in that win. May need the luck when the runs come. BUBBLES BALL (9) was good fresh then hit the line well last time second-up in a race that has proved a good form reference. She has won 2/2 when racing third-up, hard to see her mapping well though from out there.
