Western Bulldogs vs Melbourne

The Western Bulldogs and Melbourne will both be keen to keep up in the race for finals when they meet on Sunday in the final game of Round 13.

The reigning premiers are doing alright this season, but not great. After eleven games so far this year they’ve got a 6-5 record, and they sit just outside the eight.

It would be fair to say they haven’t played any footy yet that resembles their dynamic finals campaign of 2016.

However, they’ve still had a number of good wins, and are keeping themselves in the mix for finals, where – as they proved last year – anything can happen if you are good enough.

On the other side of the equation, Melbourne – they haven’t played finals in a decade, but this season is shaping as their best chance yet.

Last week’s Queen’s Birthday win put the Demons into seventh place on the ladder, although their 6-5 record is only the equal of the Bulldogs.

Something helping their September chances this year is the fact they’ve got a percentage of about 110, which might not seem all that much but it is the sixth best in the comp, and not that far behind the teams ranked third to fifth there.

The Bulldogs’ most recent result was an uncompetitive, uninspiring effort against Sydney last week. They will be desperate to turn that around.

Melbourne on the other hand come in after a win against Collingwood on Queen’s Birthday. They weren’t at their best, but did come away with the points.

Luke Beveridge has again shown his willingness this week to make big calls at the selection table, dropping former skipper Matthew Boyd.

Fletcher Roberts and Tim English have also been dropped, while Travis Cloke and Marcus Adams miss through injury.

Dale Morris, Zaine Cordy, Tom Boyd, Tom Liberatore and Mitch Honeychurch are the Bulldogs’ inclusions – potentially some very handy recruits.

Melbourne have made no change.

This match is hard to predict – given that Melbourne have arguably been in better form though, it’s a surprise they are out as far as $2.25 to win, so they represent the better value here.
