Round 1 A-League

The view from our man, Tom McDonald:

The build up to season 2017/18 has been relatively low key compared to recent seasons but if you’re anything like me you’ll be no less excited because finally the A-League is back! Melbourne City and Brisbane kick it all off tonight with what promises to be an exciting match, while the games on Saturday look even more tantalizing. Can’t wait for it to all get started. I’m aiming to continue with my weekly previews this season (time permitting) for all those interested, but for the opening round, a notoriously difficult time to bet, I’m just going to give my best suggested bets and reasons why. Enjoy round one and hopefully we get a few winners this season!

SUGGESTED BET #1: MELBOURNE CITY TO WIN @ $2.10

Brisbane Roar haven’t beaten Melbourne City in Melbourne since 2010, a run of nine matches. I know pre-season is pre-season but I haven’t rated the way Brisbane have gone into this campaign and I’m skeptical over the recruitment. It’s an aging squad no matter what anyone says and I just don’t like the look of it. I think City have recruited okay, maybe not as good as Sydney or the Wanderers, and obviously Bruno Fornaroli is a huge loss, but with a new coach on board they will want to make an impression early. With the concerns I have for Brisbane this season I think City should be too strong here.

SUGGESTED BET #2: SYDNEY TO WIN @ $2.40

Melbourne Victory are missing three key players while Sydney are virtually unchanged from last season. It’s an easy thing to say but the only thing that will stop Sydney from winning back to back titles is complacency in my opinion. They just look so strong. The Sky Blues have won 3/4 recently encounters and are undefeated in 5/5. They look a good thing here against a weakened Victory side.

SUGGESTED BET #3: ADELAIDE UNITED TO WIN @ $2.90

Adelaide are unbeaten in 5/5 previous encounters against Wellington and come into this match on the back of some solid pre-season form. Wellington on the other hand have had some fairly ordinary results and will be missing three of their internationals for the match. Both sides have new coaches but it seems the Reds have settled better under their new boss and that’s why I think they may be able to sneak away from New Zealand with all three points.

SUGGESTED BET #4: PERTH GLORY WIN/DRAW DOUBLE CHANCE @ $1.90

With all the upheaval going on in Western Sydney right now, Perth have flown somewhat under the radar and aren’t very strongly fancied here. I think they have a better chance of getting at least a point from this than most people think. They have one of the most settled line-ups in the A-League, and with Kenny Lowe remaining at the helm, there should be no teething problems early days. The Wanderers on the other hand have just lost Tony Popovic, who was a father figure at that club, and I think it’ll take them at least a few games to get into their rhythm and adjust to the new reality.
