Betfair is different to a bookmaker or the TAB's, because it is a betting exchange which means the odds are set by you the punter.
Commission is only charged on winning bets and this 5% take-out means that the odds are often much better than bookies or the tote.
The other major feature of Betfair is the ability to lay a horse (or team or person) to lose. So you don't necessarily have to pick the winner of the event, just be correct in betting that your lay doesn't win.
Many people find Betfair a little confusing at first glance, but it soon becomes quite straight-forward for punters to work out the basics of how to use it. Learning the more advanced features can take quite some time.
